Siddal

Rossetti's BEATA BEATRIX, a posthumous portrait of his wife Elizabeth Siddal Rossetti who died in 1862 at age thirty-three. Rossetti, obsessed with the Italian poet Dante Alighieri (DGR's first English translation was Dante's VITA NUOVA) likened himself to Dante, and Lizzie to Beatrice, each man having lost his beloved to death.
